Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT, the Trust), the State’s historic preservation office, located within the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), is seeking an energetic and collaborative individual for the position of Research Archaeologist. As the designated State Historic Preservation Office, MHT is responsible for updating and maintaining several databases of historic and archaeological sites, districts, buildings, and objects, as well as evaluating the significance of these resources. This position also falls within the Office of Research Survey and Registration’s Archaeology unit, consistent with MDP and the Trust’s mission of studying, evaluating, protecting and interpreting the state’s historic sites and material culture. This unit produces original research and develops field data, and participation in the Trust’s ongoing program of archaeological research is a major aspect of the position.

Main Purpose of Job

This position will perform duties related to the updating, maintenance, and collection of historical and cultural data. The position will provide essential support for the maintenance and upkeep of archaeological database products maintained by the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT, the Trust), as well as Geographic Information System (GIS) data related to the MHT archaeological research program, to ensure that these products contain accurate and current information. The Trust relies on these products as essential tools in the planning and environmental review of federal and state assisted development and public infrastructure projects throughout Maryland. The position helps facilitate Maryland compliance with federal and state historic preservation legislation including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and the Maryland Historical Trust Act of 1985, as amended, State Finance and Procurement Article §5A-325 and 5A-326 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. This position will assist the Chief Archaeologist with original archaeological research as well as the monitoring of state and/or federal grant monies administered by the Trust. Furthermore, the position will facilitate the Trust's role in assisting the growing number of counties that have enacted local legislation to protect cultural and historical resources, academics undertaking original research on topics of Maryland history and/or prehistory, and the public at large. Finally, this position is necessary to protect the considerable investment already made by the Trust in building its various data management systems.

Position Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Archaeologist, and in collaboration with archaeology staff at MHT, the Research Archaeologist undertakes the following major program activities:

• Updates and maintains the Archaeological Synthesis Database on a regularly scheduled basis; Provides research assistance and troubleshooting for users of the Archaeological Synthesis Database; Promotes and develops multiple methods for dissemination of the
information contained within the database

• Updates and Maintains spatial data within MHT’s GIS databases as it is collected in the field and recorded by the MHT archaeology program; Update all such GIS data layers on a continual basis including version captures, quality checking, and development of metadata

• Provides technical assistance and support to all users of the various MHT databases and GIS products, and responds to assigned requests for information, queries, assistance, etc.

• Conducts original research on collections and data entrusted to the Trust; Assists with MHT-partnered archaeological field and labwork; Pursues external funding for archaeological projects when appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

Selective Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation or a related field OR a bachelor's degree in unrelated field with an academic minor in archaeology or anthropology OR a year of work experience conducting archaeological field or laboratory research.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications

Relevant experience in terrestrial and/or maritime archaeology, including at least one year of archaeological fieldwork experience.

Education in or six (6) months work experience with database software (e.g. Microsoft Access, SQL Server, Oracle, etc.)

Education in or six (6) months work experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ESRI’s ArcGIS.

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
