Dear Colleagues,

We have decided to move forward with a proposed session at SHA 2018 in New Orleans and ask that you join us in discussing new developments and examples in interpretation and presentantion. One theme will be the interplay and evolving roles of the "expert" vs other participants and community stakeholders.

Please pass this on to interested colleagues.

We would appreciate expedition of your response since abstracts are due June 30.

Our abstract is below:

Session Title: The Interpretation and Presentation of Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Sites: Evolving Horizons
Abstract:
New philosophical and methodological trends in public interpretation are reshaping the messages delivered at archaeological and cultural heritage sites worldwide. The role of the expert, as well as the participatory engagement of audiences and stakeholders, is being redefined and reassessed. For example, the communication technique of facilitated dialogue is being utilized by professional interpreters to connect and interact with audiences. Facilitated dialogue is designed to engage and foster an environment where the experiences of participants are shared and explored. It is designed to bring together the experiences and expertise of participants to think through the conditions and opportunities necessary to impact the topic or issue being discussed. Dialogue facilitators do not need to be experts on the topic being discussed.
This session examines new trends in the public interpretation of archaeology. Do these actions represent a new emphasis in interpretation, or more fundamental pedagogical shifts? As a consequence, are they resulting in more effective interpretation in creating connections and facilitating perceptions and meaning for audiences?
