Senior Archeologist/Program Manager

Description:
   Hicks & Company Environmental, Archeological, and Planning Consultants, an Austin, Texas-based environmental consulting firm is seeking a professional archeologist to head its archeology department. Candidates must meet or exceed the National Park Service minimum standards for a professional archeologist as well as the Texas Historical Commission’s minimum standards for Archeological Principal Investigator. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of overseeing archeological projects with completed Phase I through III Texas Antiquities Committee Permits held in their name. Ideally, candidates will be TxDOT 2.10.1 precertified (or qualify for precertification) and have working familiarity with that agency’s Standards of Uniformity for environmental coordination. Previous experience with NEPA, NHPA, and ACT guidelines, protocols, and coordination criteria is essential for this position. Previous experience in managing projects at a senior level is preferred while familiarity with departmental management (personnel, client coordination, etc.) is a plus. Familiarity with themes of Texas history and prehistory and interpretation of sites and artifacts found in all regions of the state is preferred. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are important.

Historical Archaeologist

   Santa Clara University, Department of Anthropology, invites applications for a Historical Archaeologist, to be appointed beginning in September 2011. Applications at both the Assistant and Associate Professor levels will be considered. Expertise in California archaeology, including prehistoric, is strongly preferred. The successful applicant will teach Introduction to Archaeology (lecture and lab), and a range of archaeology classes covering Historical Archaeology and California Archaeology as well as archaeological theory and method. As this position will be closely associated with the SCU Archaeology Research Laboratory, the applicant will be expected to publish on Santa Clara University archaeology projects. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology in hand. Santa Clara is a Catholic, Jesuit, value-oriented university located in the heart of Silicon Valley. A full-time teaching load is seven courses on the quarter system with a one-course reduction for research. Quality scholarship, undergraduate teaching and advising are essential; involvement with student research is highly valued. Housing assistance is available.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelors Degree in Cultural Resources or corresponding experience in the cultural resources field. Min. 10 years of experience in the consulting industry.
7 years experience in personnel-line management, which may include large project/program management responsibilities. Ability to understand, lead and manage a team of multidisciplinary staff with diverse professional and technical backgrounds. Group Leader of the Cultural Resources Management Group, which includes the archaeology and architectural history practices. Specific responsibilities include:

Fiscal Responsibilities;
Closely monitor and manage the Group’s weekly sold time and direct labor to ensure goals are met. Track and report on the Group’s monthly financial performance, sales and backlog.
Prepare monthly financial reports and attend the monthly Mid-Month Review (MMR) meetings.
Provide direction to the Team Leaders to ensure the financial reporting, administrative requirements and project controls are attained. Review and submit for approval the Group’s expenditures, including conference and professional activity approval PAAs) requests.
Assist with the annual Budget Planning process, including development and projections of Group’s metrics and requirements for growth.

Administrative Responsibilities;
Manage Team Leader’s performance, conduct and complete annual performance reviews.
Participate in and actively contribute to Office Management Team (OMT) meetings and disseminate information to staff as appropriate. Establish and maintain productive work relationships with internal and external clients. Develop and submit for approval annual salary and bonus recommendations for the group staff. Ensure a safe work environment for group’s office and field staff, monitor project activities to encourage safety, and designate a representative to serve on the Safety Leadership Team (SLT). Review and approve group’s personnel requisitions and employment offers. Review and approve timesheets, vacation requests, and expense reports for Group staff. Provide mentorship for group staff and develop/adjust group organizational structure with a focus on market trends and opportunities. Promote professional development and ensure various certifications for staff are attained in corporate, office and industry programs. Oversee teams to ensure all annual required training/compliance courses are completed. Ensure Quality Control Reviews of all deliverables produced by staff are conducted, including proposals. Designate and ensure group participation in Quality Leadership Team (QLT), Employee Council (EC), etc.

Business Development:
Coordinate with Business Operations Managers and Program Development Managers (PDMs) in the preparation of strategic business initiatives for their market/client area(s). Coordinate and ensure preparation of annual Joint Strategic Planning (JSP) materials and inputs for Annual Office Business Plan. Generate new business and achieve annual sales goals for the group.
Review and approve all proposals developed by the group. Facilitate interoffice, inter-RBU, and interdivisional coordination/collaboration. Identify new strategic initiatives for group and coordinate with office management to develop personnel requisitions, recruit and hire candidates necessary for strategic initiative implementation. Collaborate in Go/No-Go decisions, pursuit strategy, and proposal/interview efforts for Group pursuits. Participate in key business development meetings and marketing opportunities, attend or ensure representation at weekly Business Development Steering Team meetings. Provide support to and/or act in the capacity of Project/Program Managers, Client Manager, and/or Proposal Champion as appropriate.

Salary: $90k - $120K Depending on Experience
Occasional travel as needed.

HISTORIAN / HISTORIC FIELD SUPERVISOR

   Alpine Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (Alpine) has an immediate opening for a Historical
Archaeological Field Supervisor in Montrose, Colorado. This individual will serve as a field supervisor for inventory, testing, and excavation projects in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. We are specifically seeking a well-rounded archaeologist who specializes in historical archaeology. Alpine is a small business that engages solely in contracted cultural resource studies throughout the Rocky Mountain West, Great Basin, and Southwestern states.

Responsibilities
The position is a project-level historical archaeological supervisory position and requires experience in CRM in the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin states. Responsibilities include conducting
background research, survey and excavation fieldwork, and laboratory analysis; writing reports; and
coordinating with other Alpine staff members. Work tasks will involve determinations of National
Register eligibility, evaluation of impacts, and design of mitigation measures. This work can include
all types of cultural resources, not just historical archaeological sites. Skills include working
independently, working on teams, and being able to serve as a field crew supervisor. Applicants
should be able to demonstrate excellence in technical writing, ability and experience in all areas of archaeological inquiry (research, survey, excavation, analysis). Particularly desirable are applicants that have demonstrated experience in conducting historical research using primary source materials, such as county courthouse records including land title transfers and road and ditch
plats, and in the analysis of late nineteenth and early twentieth century artifacts.

Qualifications
· Sufficient experience in CRM, preferably involving Section 106 compliance projects, to meet
federal and state agency permitting requirements as a Field Director in Colorado, Utah, and/or Wyoming. Preference will be given to those with a Master’s degree or higher with an emphasis on Historical Archaeology or History.
· An ability to analyze late nineteenth and early twentieth-century artifacts in the field,
prepare architectural descriptions, conduct historical research using primary courthouse and other archival sources, and conducting research on artifacts, manufacturers, and technology.
· Proficiency at the identification, recordation, and evaluation of archaeological sites of
prehistoric and historical archaeological sites.
· Have good interpersonal and communication skills.
· Willingness to travel often.
· Proficiency with software such as MS Word, Access, and Excel

Salary and Benefit Package
At this time, we will consider individuals interested in seasonal or staff positions. Ultimately we will fill this position as a full-time staff position. Per diem (currently $39 per day) and lodging is provided for projects outside of the local (Montrose) area. Salary is dependant on qualifications, but
is generally between $38,000 and $45,000 per year. Staff benefits include: paid holidays, health and
disability insurance upon hire, paid sick and vacation leave (after probation), professional development funding at completion of the probationary period, and eligibility for a profit-sharing retirement (401k) plan at the completion of 1 year employment.
