AH-TAH-THI-KI MUSEUM
NATURE OF WORK
This is professional and specialized work in the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum of the Seminole Tribe of Florida (STOF). Under the general supervision of the Museum Director, the incumbent (1) conducts reviews of federal agency preservation responses to planned projects in ancestral, aboriginal, or ceded Seminole lands as described in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation; Act; (2) assists with other responsibilities of the HPO; (3) oversees the field, laboratory, and office work related to the Tribal Archaeology program; (4) takes appropriate part in professional research, publication, and service activities related to the THPO context; and (5) performs other duties as assigned. The Tribal Archaeologist is an exempt position reporting to the Museum Director.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Conducts Section 106 reviews as requested by the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO), including but not limited to, assessments of: reviewed project scope and effects; appropriateness and quality of field work; reporting of work; identification of cultural resources; evaluation of cultural resources according to National Register criteria; and overall quality of cooperation with the STOF.
Processes Tribal Archaeology correspondence as appropriate correspondence data into tracking and follow-up databases, and drafting of official Tribal Archaeology reports and responses.
Assists the Compliance Review Supervisor in the development of Seminole cultural inventories
As appropriate, presents group and individual research and findings
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
" Knowledge of Southeastern U.S., Florida, and Seminole, prehistory, history, and culture.
" Knowledge of the principles of archaeology, history, and historic preservation.
" Field experience in archaeological survey and excavation.
" Knowledge of historic preservation law, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and other relevant laws, regulations, and executive orders.
" Experience in preparation of archaeological or CRM reports, including background research, artifact analysis, statistical analysis, synthesis of findings, and report production.
" General knowledge of Windows-based computing, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Explorer, and Power Point.
" Ability to become an intelligent user of (1) GIS/GPS systems and technologies, especially ESRI products; (2) relational databases such as Microsoft Access; and (3) Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS).
" Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
" Ability to serve the Tribal community, the public, and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
" Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the STOF tribal community, general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Masters Degree in Archaeology with an archaeological field school and three years of full-time professional archaeological experience, including: at least one year in the field; at least two years of archaeological cultural resource management (CRM) and/or compliance review work. At least one year of archaeological experience must include the supervision of others.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Typically, the incumbent will be required to use standard computer input (keyboard) and output (desktop monitor) devices. Substantial CRM field work may sometimes be required, which involves long periods of strenuous exertion as well as heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Most of the work will be in an office environment. However, occasional participation in archaeological fieldwork will include heavy physical labor outside under typical southern Florida conditions

ORISE Research Participation Program for the
Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, Central Identification Lab (JPAC/CIL)
The program provides opportunities to participate in on-going osteological, bioarchaeological, and forensic anthropological research at JPAC/CIL. Under the guidance of mentors, participants will have the opportunity to travel to locations of former U.S. military involvement, conduct archaeological excavations to recover human remains, and attempt to identify the remains in a laboratory environment.
Both post-doctoral and post-master's appointments are available. Program participants must have previous experience supervising archaeological fieldwork and conducting osteological analysis. They should have received the Ph.D., M.A., or M.S. degree in physical anthropology, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology (with experience in human osteology), or a related field within five years of the desired starting date for post-doctoral candidates, or within three years of the desired starting date for post-masters candidates.
The rigors of JPAC fieldwork require that participants be physically able to withstand harsh field environments for extended periods of time. Otherwise, the program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens; without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
Participants will be selected based on relevant supervisory archaeological fieldwork, osteological lab experience, academic records, recommendations, applied research interests, compatibility of background and interests with the JPAC mission, and availability of funds. Appointments are for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years (post-master's) or four additional years (post-doctoral only) upon recommendation of JPAC and subject to availability of funds. The appointments are full time at the host installation in Hawaii.
Stipends will be approximately $60,000 per year for a post-doctoral appointment and approximately $50,000 per year for a post-master's appointment. Some inbound travel and moving expenses will be reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs may also be reimbursed for research or training related to the program if approved by JPAC.
Proof of medical insurance is required. Health plans for participants are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.
This program for JPAC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Applications are accepted and processed on a continuing basis.
